Not to mention that publishing numbers is just going to open an extremely unproductive debate about how much profit the con should be allowed to make. Even though, it might not make any difference because DEF CON is obligated to spend that money somewhere. So if DEF CON shows line items and people see that those water jugs they put out cost $300 they are going to point out how absurd that is and demand DEF CON not do that to reduce cost. Hotels do the same thing for many services and on top of that they usually have minimum spends that don't actually show up in the contract. Fully burdened rates include all that so things look WAY more expensive then just looking up the item in a catalog. However, the general contractor and installers are also billing hours for the work of finding the toilet, transporting it and installing it. When they buy a toilet for their new bathroom they "only" spent a few hundred for the toilet on their bill.
Let's say someone is renovating their house and have a general contractor and a few people installing things. What never comes out is that those are fully burdened rates meaning the price is all inclusive unlike what people are used to seeing. Every few years we see a story about how the government is paying like 5k for a toilet. Government contracts are great example of this. The problem with this is that people don't understand contract costs when it comes to large corporate happenings and I don't mean the size of expenditures but the actual math in the contract.
